Alpargata is a kind of pump made of denim or duffel with a rope or rubber sole, which can be or not tied with leather or fabric stripes. It have origin in French (espadrille) and in Spain (alpargata), being a fad during the 80’s. The jute rope sole is the defining characteristic of an espadrille; the uppers vary widely in style. In French Canada, however, espadrille is the usual term for running shoes or sneakers.
