Hipsters – Who are they?

Who is the new group that is invading street fashion

Hipster or tacky? Cult or fake? These are the questions that round the new group called Hipster. Actually they’re not that new, coming from an old conter-culture from 50’s and revival during the 90’s. The term “hip” appears when the term was used to describe the ones who enjoy the growing jazz scene, but some people say that the slang came from the slang “hipi” that means “to open one’s eyes”. Gradually the term turned in Hipster.

The early hipsters of that age were Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, both writes from Beat Generation. Kerouac describe hipster as “"rising and roaming America, bumming and hitchhiking everywhere [as] characters of a special spirituality." But the term was defined by Norman Mailer that said the hipsters were the American existentialists.

During the 90’s the term began to be used closer than the meaning is being used nowadays. It was associated with alternative culture, mainly in music, and that borrow from past, in clothes or costumes. It’s about taking your grandmother’s sweater, your grandfather’s eye glasses some old worn jeans and go out listening the most new stuff that you can.

Today, the new hipsters are a bit more in about fashion. They want to be known because of it, mixing every kind of information that they can, and searching for new stuff on internet.

They take 80’s references, and almost get tacky with all those mixes. But the truth is that the movement is not the same it was in 50’s. Is much more about consumes and style, than a lifestyle as was for Kerouac. Is about another kind of music than the old jazz. Those are the new hipsters.
