At the end of the 63ª edition of one of the most important events of European cinema, the Cannes Film Festival, the jury presided by the American director Tim Burton gave the final word on Sunday night (23/05). The decisions of the jury matched with the bold profile which looked for award the prize to productions which had presented something more than the known and widespread Hollywood cinema.
The prize of Best Movie, the Palm’Or, was conceived to the production of the Thai director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, for his feature film “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”.

The production is considered completely out of the standards pre established by the international cinema, with a sensitive theme based on dead. Colors and sounds involve the viewers, which get in forests with speaking catfishes and ghost monkeys with brilliant red eyes.
Still about the best productions, the movie “Of Gods and Men” of the French director Xavier Beauvois, received the Big Award, and the “A Screaming Man”, directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, took the Jury Award.

By her performance full of nuances in the romance “Certified Copy (directed by Abbas Kiarostami, winner of the last Golden Palm), Juliette Binoche guaranteed the Best Actress award. In the category Best Actor, both big stars shared the prize: Javier Bardem, by his amazing acting in the feature film “Biutiful”, and Elio Germano, by his wonderful performance in “La Nostra Vita”.
According to the jury, the award for the two actors happened because their work called attention, even being such different acting. Both movies talked about paternity and family environment, but each one knew how to create a personal touch in the plots, which have antagonist views and contrasts.

Among polemic comments, the director Mathieu Amalric received the Best Direction Award by “Tournée”, movie which, despite being congenial, doesn’t show a very particular voice. Lee Chang-dong guaranteed the Best Screenplay with his work “Poetry”. The Golden Chamber, which is designated to the fresher, stayed with Michael Rowe by his work “Ano Bisiesto” and the Best Short Film went to “Chienne d’Histoire” by the director Serge Avedikian.
